GREEN MAINTENANCE

A crew of active volunteers was out on Wednesday to aerate our lawn bowling green. From past experience, I can attest that this task can be very satisfying. Thank you for your dedication. Without your efforts we wouldn't have a lawn bowling club.

(See the photos - 2019 menu). The tournament was held at the Vic West Lawn Bowling Club.

THE BETTY & DUNCAN LOCKE MIXED PAIRS TOURNAMENT

Fourteen teams competed in the annual Mixed Pairs Tournament. The teams were divided into two groups of seven and each team played a round-robin of six 6-end games within their group plus a "cross-over" game with a team from the other group.

In Group "A", the winners were Bill Tschirhart & Sheila Wethered, followed in second place with Percy Cowan & Sue Higbie. In Group "B", the winners were Maria Ridewood & Ross Bulley, followed by Carol McCoy & Clint Bailey.

Following the two semi-final games involving the winning teams from Group "A" playing against the winning teams from Group "B", the spectators were treated to some spectacular shot-making involving the teams of Ridewood & Bulley competing against McCoy & Bailey. It could have been anyone's game up to the final end. However, Maria Ridewood & Ross Bulley emerged as the overall champions.

CANADA DAY JITNEY

CLBC President, Ross Bulley, organized a fun-filled Canada Day Jitney consisting of the three 4-end games. Each game illustrated one situation that a lawn bowler might encounter in a real game.

Fifty-six bowlers participated in the mini-games and several spectators joined the bowlers for lunch.

Reen Lloyd and her hospitality team provided stunning decorations and Judith Bulley provided several absolutely outstanding desserts to top off what can only be described as a perfect day.  See the photos - 2019 menu.

MIXED MEDLEY TOURNAMENT

Bill Tschirhart organized another Mixed Medley Tournament on Sunday, June 9. Bill describes the tournament as follows: "Each team of four begins in the fours tournament. When a fours team loses its first game or wins the fours tournament (whichever comes first), it breaks into two pairs teams and begins play in the pairs tournament. When a pairs team loses its first game or wins the pairs tournament (whichever comes first), the members of the team begin play in an open singles tournament. When you lose in the singles tournament, it is hoped that you will be a “marker” for those still playing."

See photos of the winners under the Photos - 2019 menu.

NATIONAL BOWLS DAY

The second annual National Bowls Day was held at the Cowichan Lawn Bowling Club on Saturday, June 8, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. More than eighty people were counted during the day with several young children (and, hopefully, future lawn bowlers).

BBQ'd hot dogs, chips, and as beverage were available from our meister chef Tim McGiffin. Sue Higbie and Percy Cowan managed the event with lots of help from several people who volunteered during the day.

I know the event was a success when it was reported to me that Kane (my grandson) told his mother at the end of the day that it was his best day yet (and then he promptly fell asleep).

Photos of our next generation of lawn bowlers appear under the Photos - 2019 menu.

VICTORIA DAY JITNEY

Fifty eager bowlers participated in a very wet and decidedly cool Victoria Day Jitney. The players were divided into two groups (Red and Blue teams). The original idea was to play three 4-end games. Jim Irvine once again displayed his considerable skill, winning the Spider that kicked off the jitney. The overall winners in the Red Group were Mary Trottier, Wayne Grant, and Beth Driedger. The winners in the Blue group were Jeff Doskotch, Dawn Nakatsu, and Maria Ridewood. See the Photos section for photos of the event.
